Lake Malawi is one of the deepest lakes in the world. In the opinion of many cichlid lovers, it is the most beautiful and impressive lake. Although smaller than Victoria and Tanganyika, Lake Malawi is that contains the richest fauna in the world with approximately 800 different species of ciclidae. Unfortunately, the lake is heavily fished and many species are endangered. C. Labidochrimis generally stays near the surface and is not found below 30 meters deep. The electric yellow cichlid is one of the most favored african cichlids because not only does it have a beautiful yellow color, but it is also quite hardy and easy to keep in a home aquarium. The body is thin and elongated which allows the electric yellow cichlid to swim quickly. The tank should have at least 55 gallons. It is preferable that the tank have a lot of rock work with plenty of hiding spots. This will greatly reduce aggression and territorial behavior. Another reason the electric yellow cichlid is favored in many aquariums is because it is far less aggressive that most other Lake Malawi cichlids. Even though it is less aggressive, the electric yellow cichlid can be quite territorial and you should keep a male with at least two females. The male becomes aggressive and territorial in mating, so if you have a small aquarium (less than 55 gallons) is recommended to keep a single male.
Electric Yellow Cichlid Breeding Information: Mating is interesting: the male and female will begin digging in the sand, where the female will get up to 30 eggs. To defend eggs from predators or other fish, the female puts eggs in her mouth, where she keeps them for 21-24 days. During that time the female will eat very little. After the young leave the female takes care of them another week, until they are used to the aquarium. Fry will eat special food for fry, flakes sprinkled with hand or small live food.
Electric Yellow Cichlid Sexing Information: There is no obvious color difference between males and females, but males may show more black on the fins, particularly the ventral fins. They may also exhibit a brownish patch in the area between the eye and mouth.
Electric Yellow Cichlid Diet: Small crustaceans and insect larvae, will accept most aquarium foods. More omnivorous than many mbuna, but the diet should still include a strong vegetable component.
Electric Yellow Cichlid Temperment: Mildly aggressive. Put with other african cichlids.
Electric Yellow Cichlid Common Diseases: Malawi Bloat - condition deadly to malawi cichlids. It is caused by too much protein in the diet of some cichlids.
